“And thus I make it my ambition to preach the gospel, not where Christ has already been named, lest I build on someone else’s foundation, but as it is written, ‘Those who have never been told of him will see, and those who have never heard will understand.’” (Romans 15:20-21)
For every 30 missionaries that go to places already reached with the gospel, only 1 missionary will go to a place that is considered unreached. Not only that, but churches throughout America are spending approximately 99% of their missions budget in places that are already reached with the gospel. Yes, you read that correctly. On average, churches are using less than 1% of their designated missions funds to reach people who have not yet heard the gospel. Something must change. We can no longer ignore the urgent need in these hard-to-reach places.
We are currently preparing for a new ministry assignment in Yokohama, Japan—a major port city just south of Tokyo. The Japanese people have a unique set of beliefs that blend ancient traditions and newer Western practices. While Shintoism and Buddhism are widely practiced, they are not widely believed. Depression and suicide are rampant, and the roots of honor-shame culture run deep. With only a 0.3% Christian population among the 117 million people, the harvest is truly plentiful, but the laborers are far too few. (Matthew 9:38)
Our long-term vision is both simple and robust:
to plant a healthy, gospel-centered church
in a gospel-needy area that currently has no church,
and to see that church embrace and experience the fullness of a gospel-oriented life
that enables it to make a gospel-impact both locally and globally.
As we prepare for the hard work of cross-cultural church-planting over the next several years, we will join a healthy local church, embrace the language and culture of the Japanese people, prioritize evangelism and discipleship, and employ church-centered missions strategies.
Our hope is that you would prayerfully consider partnering with us in this endeavor. We invite you to join us by praying for our family, for Japan, and for God to send forth more laborers into this vastly beautiful—but terribly broken—land. Would you also seriously consider investing a portion of what God has blessed you with to expand his Kingdom among the Japanese people? Let's keep moving the Kingdom forward—together!
