Meet the Pastor: Karlos
Karlos was born into a Miskito family along the coast of La Moskita. His family lived off of fishing near the coast and Karlos also began fishing with his family after graduating the 6th grade. His first language has always been the indigenous Miskito language, and he is proud of his humble roots. His culture is different from typical Honduran, Spanish speaking culture. Karlos has a huge heart for indigenous people found throughout La Moskitia from Belize to Costa Rica and desires to see active churches in every Miskito community in the region where he lives.
He left his family as a teen to become a diver until an accident happened years later during a storm off the coast of Honduras. Due to the accident, the lower part of his foot was amputated, and he was in the hospital for months. During his stay in the public hospital, multiple people witnessed to him, and he gave his life to the Lord in January of 1973.
After his dramatic conversion, Karlos entered seminary and began studying to become a pastor. He began pastoring while still studying in 1975 and graduated in 1977. He first was sent to pastor in the community of Mocoron followed by Wampusirpi and Kurhpa along the Patuca River. In Kurhpa he met his wife Inocencia Flores, and they were married by the church in September of 1984.
Karlos has always worked as a bivocational pastor and in his early years chopped down large trees with an axe to make into canoes. Later on, he dedicated to small plots of cattle and planting on his wifes family’s land. In addition, Karlos has hunted, sold Bibles, and fished to feed his family over almost 50 years of ministry.
After marriage, Karlos and Inocencia had seven children while continuing to plant churches along the Patuca River. In total, Pastor Karlos has planted the six churches of Paptalaya I, Ahuas 1, Diamanta, Kurhpa I, Wampusirpi, and Krausirpi. He has baptized over 700 new believers, married 70 couples in the church, and taught at the central Baptist seminary in Puerto Lempira.
